Design is in every day, Design started way back 1000s of years ago

The design states back to Feng shui or Vaastu Shastra, to stone-age.

Ancient greeks used to design for ergonomics, Walt Disney designed Disney land for users fun and safety. The design moved towards Human-Machine interaction.

Design-Anything that is solution-driven with a Function and adds a form to the end product is DESIGN.

The design needs to be delivered with Empathy in mind, Context of design plays an integral part in designing.

Design can be framed under 10 principle by Dieter rams.

10 Principles of good design

  1. Good design needs to be innovative
  2. Good design makes a product useful
  3. Good design must be aesthetic
  4. Good design makes a Product Understandable
  5. Good design is unobtrusive
  6. Good design is being honest
  7. Good design is long-lasting
  8. Good design is thorough down to the last detail
  9. Good design is environment friendly
  10. Good design is as little design as possible

Examples of Good and Bad Designs

Half helmet.
Half Helmet

1)HALF HELMET- Half Helmets are dangerous to use. The design only covers half the head. Less Resistance. Safety isn't at all there.

Full Helmets are a sign of Good design. it’s safe and covers entire head.
Full Helmet
  1. Full Helmets are a sign of Good design. It’s safe and covers the entire head. Rider friendly.Advanced Vision.
Old remote

2. Bad design- it has too many buttons to press, confusing and difficult to use.

New Remote

2. Good Design- It is a pointer-based remote with fewer buttons.Easy to navigate.Simple design. It has a scroller as well with direction buttons

3) Bad design as it has a top load system. removing the clothes from the washing machine becomes heavy.

3) Good Design as the machine is front load. The Load of clothes can be heavy and still be taken out easily without much effort.

4) Bad design — The plant doesn't get enough space for roots to grow. Water flow is less as water floats and doesn't sync in.

4) Good design — This pot has good water retention levels.Water gets absorbed easily. Roots of this plant can easily grow.

5) Bad Design- The opening of oil container is stuffed with a cork and has little space for re-fueling and usage path.

5) Good design — This oil container has a sipper like design which makes the passage of oil transfer easier. easy to refill.

6) Bad Design — The engine is left out in open space, fuel pipe is exposed in open. Theift of petrol is easy as it is exposed.

6) Good design — these examples have not exposed their petrol pipes. Hence making it harder to rob from.

So all in all as a design aspirant I feel and have started observing design in day to day objects. I’m able to distinguish products with reasoning as good and bad design.
